Gyógyszernek olyan hatóanyagot nevezünk, ami valamilyen betegség ellen hat úgy, hogy annak tüneteit orvosolva a betegség elmúlását váltja ki. "Az antibiotikum nem gyógyít, a legtöbb csak lelassítja a baktérium működését, ezáltal időt ad az immunrendszer mozgósítására, hogy saját magunk győzzük le a támadót. Ezért nem szabad abbahagyni az antibiotikum szedését akkor, ha már jobban érezzük magunkat, hiszen a baktérium elkezdhet újra szaporodni, és visszatérnek a tünetek, de az is előfordul, hogy a baktériumnak az antibiotikummal szemben ellenálló sejtvonala válik uralkodóvá, és emiatt a kezelés hatástalan lesz" - magyarázta Barcs István, aki szerint azt sem szabad figyelmen kívül hagyni, hogy az antibiotikum csak baktériumra, mégpedig csak a rá érzékeny baktériumra lehet hatékony, éppen ezért hiába várjuk, annak sem lázcsillapító, sem közérzetjavító hatása nincs.
